6th World Ing Round 2, Lee Sedol v. Zhou Heyang

Note: I don’t currently intend to provide detailed commentary here because it is difficult to capture so many snapshots. However, I probably can provide a download-able sgf file with some variations. If you would like to see that please leave a comment.

New moves are being invented everyday. For example, white 14 is a very contemporary move. Black chose to not finish the joseki at the bottom left corner, and white did not play the immediate follow-up moves. Rather, white is asking black to make a choice of A, B, or C.

Lee Sedol 9p is still a relatively young player. He was very famous with his extremely aggressive style when he first appeared in world tournament. However, a few years have passed, and now his positional judgment skill also improved greatly. Black 59 and 61 are just beautiful moves. Black 61 is developing his own center moyo, while aiming at white’s weakness. After 61, I think black was slightly ahead already.

2

White understood that he could not allow black’s center to become territory. 68 and 70 were very strong moves. However, black 71 was an excellent defense. It aims at A and B at the same time.

3

Black sacrificed four stones to capture the five white stones. It was obvious that black gained more territory than white in this exchange. Now black has a comfortable lead.

4

Even though black is leading already, he still played at 103, a very complicated and aggressive move. This move shows his definitive style, a sharp contrast with the very famous Lee Changho 9p.

5

After 103, black made the last exchange with white and was able to capture a white stone at the bottom. It secured his lead on territory. Black 115 is a winning move, gaining territory in the center while threatening white’s group. No chance for white after this.
